Our Approach to Journalism
One of Overstory’s values is to center people and place. Statewide community listening is a cornerstone practice of our program and helped us shape our initial coverage areas and reporting approach. As a new local newsroom, we acknowledge that there are many others who came before us and that there are many lessons to be learned from their contributions. We also center people and place by seeking out experts and practitioners of ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i and Hawaiian culture to help us serve Hawai‘i in a way that’s respectful and culturally appropriate.

Our Approach to Journalism
Overstory is an independent, online newsroom that centers Hawai‘i residents’ needs, redistributes the power of knowledge and encourages civil discourse. We apply a systemic, solutions-oriented lens to our in-depth reporting. We don’t want to just cover events or conflicts. Instead, we want to understand why things are the way they are and untangle the intersections between the patterns, systems and assumptions that shape Hawai‘i’s major challenges – and uncover potential ways forward.
We focus on housing because safe, stable shelter is the bedrock of healthy communities. Hawai‘i has faced a housing shortage for decades and it’s reached an alarming milestone as more Native Hawaiians now live on the continent than in their own homeland and one in three local households have had someone consider moving out of state. We want to examine what’s being done to help locals stay in Hawai‘i while centering the voices most impacted by Hawai‘i’s housing challenges and paths forward.

We recognize that the health of culture, community and individuals is inseparable from the health of our natural resources. We want to know how local communities are mitigating climate change and biodiversity loss, building resilience ahead of natural disasters, perpetuating traditional Hawaiian stewardship practices, and increasing local food production and access. Our goal is to help deepen understanding of the many people and communities working to create a more restorative, sustainable Hawai‘i and build more reciprocal relationships with our environment.

We aim to help readers better understand what resources are available and how health intersects with one’s social and economic conditions so that they can make informed decisions about their lives. We also seek to explore access to care, efforts to address health inequities, and uplift people’s lived experiences and voices.
